Before Studying Music

The Davis Art Center, 1998. I found a beautiful quote from “Silence” by John Cage, where he stated that before studying music, one had to learn how to listen. The statement was 98 words long. I built 98 wind monitors that were calibrated to trigger a switch when the wind reached 3 MPH. I mounted the monitors across the roof of the Art Center. Each monitor was directly wired to a display inside of the gallery. The display was the quote, with each word wired up to a wind monitor. The quote was arranged to be a plan of the rooftop. When the wind blew, individual words would illuminate. You could see, but not hear the wind on the roof.
